Berlin techno was included in the UNESCO cultural heritage list

Berlin techno was included in the national list of intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO. He was nominated by the German Ministry of Culture in recognition of his contribution to the city’s cultural identity.

It was led by a non-profit organization Rave the Planet, which supports the culture of electronic music. She submitted an application for the inclusion of techno in the UNESCO list in November 2022.

“Congratulations to all creators of culture who shaped and contributed to the development of Berlin’s technoculture. This is an important milestone for the entire culture, and our joy cannot be expressed in words“, – the statement of the organization says.

The network of Berlin techno clubs Clubcommission also reacted to this decision. There they called him “another important milestone for Berlin techno producers, artists, club operators and event organizers“.

“This decision will help us ensure that club culture is recognized as a valuable sector that deserves protection and support“, – added a Clubcommission board member Lutz Leichsenring.

In addition to Berlin techno, the German UNESCO commission added five new items to the national list of intangible cultural heritage. It’s the singing tradition of Finsterwalde, a winter parade in Bavaria where participants dress up in furry monster costumes, tapestries from the land of Hesse, Viez apple cider, and mountaineering in Saxony

In total, to date, the German UNESCO list has 150 items.
