Cancer is getting younger: oncologists analyzed patient data

Over the past three decades, the number of new cancer cases in people under the age of 50 worldwide has increased by 79%. This is evidenced by a study by scientists published in the journal BMJ Oncology, writes MedicalXpress. Scientists used data from the Global Burden of Disease for 2019 on 29 types of cancer in 204 countries and regions. They looked at new cases, deaths, health outcomes and additional risk factors for all people aged 14 to 49 to estimate changes between 1990 and 2019. Most often, the cause of death of young people is cancer: breast cancer; trachea; lungs; intestine; stomach The highest rates of cancer among young adults in 2019 were in North America, Australasia and Western Europe. The number of cancer patients and deaths under the age of 50 also increased in Oceania, Eastern Europe and Central Asia. In low- and middle-income countries, early-stage cancer affected women significantly more than men. Based on these trends, scientists predict that in 2023, the global number of new early-onset cancer cases and related deaths will increase by another 31% and 21%, respectively. Most often, this diagnosis will be received at the age of about 40 years. Scientists do not reject genetic factors that affect the development of oncology. But a diet high in red meat and salt and low in fruit and milk, and drinking alcohol also have an impact on health. Hypodynamia, overweight and high blood sugar are also on the list.
