During the last month of summer, the highest global average monthly sea surface temperature during the observation period was recorded – 20.9°C. According to the UN, the average temperature during June-August was also a record – 16.77 °C. This is 0.66°C above average and the previous record set in 2019. He called on world leaders to act to prevent “climate chaos”. Climate change is also influenced by the “El Nino” phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean – an increase in the temperature of the water surface. The eight-month period from January to August 2023 was the second warmest on record after 2016, when a strong warming El Niño occurred. At the same time, the Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organization, Petteri Taalas, noted that the temperature usually rises “before the full impact of warming from the El Niño event takes place.” According to him, this phenomenon is likely to lead to an increase in temperature in the second year after its development.
