Cholera outbreaks after the Russian terrorist attack at Kakhovskaya HPP were avoided – Ministry of Health

After the Russians blew up the Kakhovskaya HPP, almost 700,000 Ukrainians were left without access to drinking water. More than 3,000 people with acute intestinal infection were examined for cholera. However, cholera was not detected in any case, the Ministry of Health reported. “In order to prevent the deterioration of the sanitary situation, three infectious disease centers were deployed in the affected areas to treat patients with suspected acute intestinal infections and cholera. These facilities were provided with special sets of medicines,” said Chief State Sanitary Doctor Ihor Kuzin. We will remind you that after the destruction of the Kakhovskaya HPP dam on June 6, 180 settlements of the Kherson, Dnipropetrovsk, and Mykolaiv regions, where almost 900,000 people lived, entered the emergency zone. 148,000 tons of drinking and technical water were delivered to the emergency zone. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued 237,000 tablets to disinfect drinking water for the population, water supply companies and critical infrastructure facilities. Immediately after the terrorist attack at the Kakhovskaya HPP in Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Mykolaiv and Odesa regions, 97 groups of operational response to biological, chemical and radiation threats were formed. “Monitoring was carried out daily, thanks to the coordinated work of specialists of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and doctors, emergency services and the prompt exchange of information with local self-government bodies, and because people listened to the restrictions and recommendations, it was possible to avoid outbreaks of infectious diseases,” says Kuzin. Since July, in the territories of the affected communities, where the water has completely receded and the land has dried up, experts have examined more than 100 soil samples in the territories of Mykolaiv and Kherson regions that were flooded. In the future, monitoring of sea and river water, as well as surface water bodies, will continue. In the case of fixing deviations or non-compliance with sanitary and hygienic standards, the Central Committee of the Central Bank of Ukraine will inform local self-government bodies and communities about possible risks. In general, if in the first days after the flooding due to the destruction of the Kakhovskaya HPP, according to bacteriological indicators, non-compliance with sanitary standards reached 35%, now the level of water pollution has decreased to a deviation of 10% in individual monitoring points. “The main stage of the liquidation of the disaster at the Kakhovskaya HPP was completed on August 30. The headquarters for the liquidation of the consequences of the emergency situation has now completed its work, the emergency services will continue to monitor the situation according to their directions,” the Ministry of Health added.
