Composer and music critic Piotr Pospelov died

Composer and music critic Piotr Pospelov died on the evening of August 27 at the age of 61, his sister Ekaterina reported on Facebook. A week before that, he was hospitalized by an ambulance and operated on, pianist Basinia Shulman said on social networks.

Pospelov is a pianist, graduated from the theoretical and compositional faculty of the Moscow State Conservatory named after Tchaikovsky, studied at the Prokofiev School of Music and at the Termen Center. He is the author and co-author of several works of academic music, several operas and ballets performed in Russian theaters, soundtracks for films.

In 2023, he received the “Golden Mask” theater award in the nomination “Best work of a composer” for the orchestral reconstruction of the ballet “Katharina, or the Robber’s Daughter” by Caesar Puna for the Krasnoyarsk Opera and Ballet Theater.

Piotr Pospelov is the author of more than one and a half thousand articles, mainly about opera, academic, symphonic and chamber music, writes Classicalmusicnews. He worked in the newspapers “Kommersant”, “Izvestia”, “Russian Telegraph”, “Conservator”, “Vedomosti”, “Russky Zhurnal”, “Afysha” and “Expert” magazines. The composer was a regular guest of Radio Svoboda broadcasts.
