Crimean historian, writer, TV presenter, author of articles on the history and culture of the peninsula Oleksa Hayvoronskyi died after a long illness.

This was reported by the Crimean Tatars editorial office on Facebook.

After a long illness, the famous historian, writer, great friend of the Crimean Tatar people Mr. Oleksa Hayvoronsky died. His contribution to the history of the Crimean Tatars is difficult to assess. He revealed to us the world of the Crimean Khanate and the Golden Horde, told us about all the preserved sights of the peninsula. He collected the history of Crimea little by little and generously shared his knowledge“, the message says.

Oleksa Hayvoronskyi was known in Ukraine and abroad as a specialist in the history of Crimea during the existence of the Crimean Tatar state there – the Crimean Khanate. Hayvoronskyi shared his research and historical knowledge in articles for Radio Svoboda, television programs for the ATR channel (“Walks through Crimea with Oleksa Hayvoronskyi”) and the publication Crimean Tatars.

He began his work as a historian at the Bakhchisarai Cultural Reserve in 1996, after graduating from the university. He worked for 15 years in the Khan Palace of Bakhchisaray.

As a museum worker, I was not so much a researcher of the academic type as a popularizer of history. That is, I considered my task accessible to tell people what the Crimean Khanate is, what kind of civilization it was, what is the value of its monuments for the historical heritage of Ukraine and Europe in general“, Hayvoronsky said in one of the interviews.

After the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014, Hayvoronsky remained in his native Bakhchysarai. He said that he remains a citizen of Ukraine who continues to live in Crimea, and called himself a “prisoner of historical circumstances.”

In 2016, Hayvoronskyi presented one of his books – “The country of Crimea. Essays on the sights of the history of the Crimean Khanate” – at the Forum of Publishers in Lviv.

He is also the author of a two-volume book “Lords of Two Continents” about the history of Crimea in the XV-XVIII centuries.

Hayvoronsky created the script for the first Crimean Tatar children’s fairy-tale film “Khydyr-Dedye”, researched the biography of Ismail Gasprinsky for the film “The Interpreter” and Bekir Choban-Zade for the film “The Way of Dzhigit”.

In January 2017, the historian deleted all his pages in social networks, leaving a link to his e-mail on his Facebook, which became his only means of communication.

What is Crimea historically for Ukraine? We have a common destiny, although we were difficult neighbors for each other. The tragedy of the loss of Crimea is not only the tragedy of the loss of territory, but the loss of a second indigenous people. Because the value of the state is its people“, Hayvoronskyi said in one of his lectures.
