Draining of the Kakhovsky Reservoir may lead to desertification of southern Ukraine – Ministry of Defense

The shallowing of the Kahovsky Reservoir as a result of the Russian Federation’s detonation of the hydroelectric dam may increase the trend of desertification in the south of Ukraine. Drainage of the territories in the future will affect the food system, Vladyslav Dudar, an officer of the Main Department of Mine Action of Civil Defense and Environmental Security of the Ministry of Defense, said during the briefing “Three months since the occupiers destroyed the dam of the Kakhovskaya HPP” on September 5. According to him, the average annual precipitation in the Kherson region is 400 mm. They exceed the indicators characteristic of deserts, in particular, in Spain, where an average of 200 mm of precipitation falls per year. However, the lack of a sustainable water supply, which was provided by the reservoir, will negatively affect the ecology of the south, says Dudar.
