On January 1, 2024, a horror movie trailer was released “Mickey’s Mouse Trap” (Mickey’s Mouse Trap), whose main character is a killer in the mask of a popular animated character – Mickey Mouse. This happened on the same day that Disney’s copyright on the character expired in the US.

For the first time, this animated mouse appeared to the public in a short animation “Steamboat Willie” (Steamboat Willie) in 1928. The cartoon was created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks. It was the third Mickey and Minnie Mouse cartoon, but it was the first to eventually be released. In this animation, Mickey has a more menacing appearance, looking more like a rat than a mouse.
In the new year of 2024, the 95-year copyright on Mickey’s original appearance has expired. So from now on, animators, writers and cinematographers can freely use this image in their future works.

Already on January 1, the first trailer of a horror film with a character similar to an animated mouse appeared. In the upcoming film directed by Jamie Bailey, a man in a Mickey mask with a knife in his hands terrorizes a group of young people in an arcade.
“People shouldn’t take it too seriously, we made a ridiculously fun movie“, the BBC quotes the author of the script, the producer of the film and the performer of the main role, Simon Phillips.
“We just wanted to have fun. I mean, it’s Mickey Mouse from Steamboat Willie killing people. It’s just ridiculous“, director Jamie Bailey said in a statement.
The Mickey Mouse horror movie doesn’t have a confirmed release date yet. It is expected to be released in March this year.
Not the only new “incarnation” of Mickey Mouse
The character of the slasher film (a genre of horror film in which the character commits serial murders with the help of a cold weapon) is not the only upcoming new “incarnation” of the hero of children’s cartoons, Mickey Mouse.
According to AP, another film is being shot by director Stephen LaMorte, who previously directed the horror parody “The Grinch.”
“A nighttime steamboat ride turns into a desperate fight for survival in New York when a mischievous mouse becomes a terrifying reality“, this is how LaMorte described the plot of his upcoming film on Instagram.
He also shared the poster of the tape, which will have the same name as the original cartoon from 1928 – “Steamboat Willie” (Steamboat Willie).

The original appearance of Mickey Mouse and the loss of copyright on his image inspired not only cinematographers. In order not to be redundant, a new video game was presented, in which she also appeared.
Nightmare Forge Games has announced plans to release a survival horror game called Infestation. It was also announced with a trailer in which the words: “I thought it was just rodents, but there is something else here“. Then a huge, blood-spattered Mickey appears on the screen.
A representative of Nightmare Forge Games said that the 1928 version of Mickey, which they were able to add to the game due to the expiration of the rights to it, “fits perfectly as the antagonist that causes the infection.”

We will remind you that a slasher film was released this year “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey”. In it, Winnie the Pooh exterminates everyone who finds himself in their forest. Variety included this film among the worst films of 2023 with the following comment: “Director Rhys Freak Waterfield revealed that irreverent gadgets end up cooking for beloved brands. With copyrights for Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, Superman and other characters expiring in 2024, expect even more brutal abuse of beloved characters.”
