“Stus-Fest” dedicated to Vasyl Stus will be held in Ukraine and abroad

On the birthday of the Ukrainian dissident poet Vasyl Stuson January 6, the All-Ukrainian and international festival will begin “Stus-Fest”.

“Stus-Fest is immediately conceived as an annual January festival that will experiment with formats and expand every year. One year we will hold a Stus-Fest in Ukrainian Donetsk and Horlivka, where Vasyl Stus lived and worked“, said the organizer of the festival and the head of the DSP theater community Alex Borovenskyi.

In the comment for UP. Culture Alex Borovenskyi shared that the idea of ​​creating a festival arose from researching Vasyl Stus’s work. At first, poems, documents and literature about the poet were studied in order to create the play “Stusanin”. This theater production has been running since 2019.

“We worked very fruitfully with the texts and biography of Vasyl Stus all this time. And, of course, it inspired us a lot. We worked with the book “The Case of Vasyl Stus”, edited by Vakhtang Kipiani, and completely “excavated” it. And since the show has been around for a long time and is quite popular, we have been developing it all the timeBorovenskyi added.

The organizers came to the creation of the festival gradually, first, for the birthday of Vasyl Stus, they arranged a performance and a discussion of the artist’s life, the importance of his work in our time. Gradually, a whole “Universe of Vasyl Stus” emerged in the theater community, and in December 2023, the idea arose to combine several events from different groups into a single festival.

“We started with one event in Kyiv. Currently, we already have five or six countries, or seven countries, which will already be doing events in the neighborhood. Lots of cities, lots of teams, lots of languages ​​involved. We were joined by the military, who record Vasyl Stus’s poems for us from the front. It seems to me that one important story emerged very quickly in this way – we finally had a unifying symbol. We can unite for the sake of Vasyl Stus, for the sake of his poetry. And so far we are doing it – uniting“, the theater actor concluded.

The festival will be held until January 28, 2024. The key events of “Stus-Fest” will take place on January 6.

In Kyiv at the festival you will be able to see: DakhTrio with the new program “Stus: Mercilessly“, the play “Stusanina” from the theater community DSPtheater “Wheel“with a monologue”A black bird with a white mark“.

In addition to theatrical performances, there will also be a poetry evening of the sixties.Stus is not the only one” from “Theater Between Three Columns” jointly with DSP and the “Christmas Vasilis” party, organized by the Sixties Museum.

In Lviv, within the framework of “Stus-Fest”, the Les Kurbas Theater will show the play “Marko the Damned or Eastern Legend“.

In Kherson DSP and the Kherson Theater named after M. Kulish will also play “Stusanin“, and in Lutsk the planetarium “Svitlozorium” together with the theater “Garmyder” will show a special program “Stus under the stars“, where visitors can listen to the poetry of Vasyl Stus while looking at the starry sky.

The festival program is also presented in other countries. In particular, in Tallinn, “Stes-Fest” will be presented by the Association of Ukrainian Organizations in Estonia with a poetry evening.Poems Like a Shot” and showing the video version of the performance “Stus: prohibited” of the Kherson Theater.

In France, in the city of Nantes, the Ukrainian library “Shaw” will also show a video from the play “Stusanina” and Parajanov’s film “Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors” with the reproduction of the legendary scene with Vasyl Stus, where the poet exclaimed: “Who is against tyranny – stand up“.

Stus-Fest was also joined by:

Starting from December, within the framework of the festival, a campaign of poetry readings was started #ordinary_stous In this project, the military records videos in which they read poems by Vasyl Stus.

As the organizers noted, on the one hand, this is an attempt to understand and say goodbye to the poet’s Soviet past. The fact is that for several years Stus served near Nizhny Tagil, beyond the Urals. On the other hand, it is also a reminder of the value of culture and history, for which Ukrainians are currently fighting.

“We are infinitely grateful to our Defenders for the superhuman work they do defending our land and our culture. We want their voice to be heard.
