Over the past year, during most of which a full-scale war has been going on in Ukraine, the demand for Ukrainian authors and their books abroad has almost doubled. “Interest in Ukrainian literature has been growing little by little since 2013, according to the data of the Ukrainian Book Institute. From approximately 48, the number of translated Ukrainian books increased to more than 120 in 2021. In 2022, there was a jump – foreigners bought the rights to more than 230 books by Ukrainian authors,” – Forbes Ukraine writes. Among the publishers, the most rights to Ukrainian books were sold abroad by Stary Lev Publishing House, Ranok and Vivat. Currently, “VSL” has signed contracts for the translation and publication of works in 42 languages in 48 countries. At the same time, South Korea, the Czech Republic and Poland are among the countries that buy the rights to the books of this publishing house the most. However, after the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation among foreigners, interest in Ukrainian veteran literature and authors who joined the ranks of defenders or volunteered increased. These are, for example, Artem Cheh, Artem Chapai, Oleksandr Mykhed, Valeriy Markus, Andriy Lyubka, Kateryna Kalytko, Maryana Savka, Tamara Gorikha Zernya. “Over the course of a year, Ukraine made a quantum leap in rights sales. Other countries will read more Ukrainians and see what quality texts and professionally executed illustrations we have, and they will listen more,” said Director of Vivat Publishing House Yuliya Orlova.
