As a result of the war in Ukraine, almost 400 educational institutions were completely destroyed. Every seventh school was damaged.

Deputy Minister of Education and Science Yevhen Kudryavets told about this during the “Ukraine. Year 2024” forum, Ukrinform reports.

“Today, every seventh school in Ukraine has been damaged as a result of a full-scale invasion. More than 3.5 thousand educational institutions have suffered one or another destruction, almost 400 have been completely destroyed.” Kudryavets noted.

According to him, the World Bank estimates the cost of restoring the educational infrastructure of Ukraine at almost 14 billion dollars.

At the same time, part of the damaged institutions cannot be restored.

As the deputy minister emphasized, the destruction of the educational infrastructure disrupts children’s and youth’s access to education. This affects the quality of education, their socialization and integration into society.

“Almost a million children are on distance learning, when they cannot have personal communication, socialization with their friends and teachers at all.

Another million have access to mixed education. This means that they cannot study live all the time, but they have the opportunity to visit the school sometimes.” – told Kudryavets.

We will remind you that in July 2023, according to the Ministry of Education and Culture, the number of damaged and destroyed educational institutions was less – more than 1,000 and more than 300, respectively.

In Zaporizhzhia, they plan to open underground schools by September 1, so that next school year children can receive education in a mixed format. And the mayor of Kharkiv hopes that the first underground school in the city will start working in March.

We also told that educators from Lviv collected over UAH 1 million for Mykolaiv Lyceum No. 55. It will be the only school in the district with an equipped shelter and the possibility of offline learning.
