Archaeologists have unearthed five Bronze Age axes in Poland. The find dates back to the period between 1700 and 1300 BC.
The find was discovered by “treasure hunter” Denys Konkol when he was exploring the forests of the Kocewie region in Gdańsk Pomerania after receiving permission from the local authorities.
When he came across five bronze axes buried just below the surface of the soil, he immediately informed the scientists, writes Arkeonews.
“The extraction of these finds took place under the archaeological supervision of our colleagues from the Voivodship Administration for the Protection of Monuments. This means that we prevented the possible destruction of the monument.”– said Ihor Strzok, responsible for preservation of monuments of the Pomeranian Voivodeship.

Under a layer of dirt and grass, the researchers found five axes buried together in a pit at a depth of 20-30 centimeters underground.
Strzok said artifacts from this period are rarely found in the region, making the find particularly unique.
In his opinion, these axes could be related to the Baltic culture, originating from modern Lithuania or north-eastern Poland.
The find has already been investigated by Piotr Klimashevskyi, head of the Department of Archaeological Monuments. Axes are quite large, with a thin handle with raised edges and a wide blade.
The archaeologist believes that the axes were part of a ritual offering, possibly related to trade or religion, practiced in the area during the Bronze Age.
Scientists have seen individual bronze axes of this period before, but this is the first time when there were as many as 5 of them.
Traditionally, the Bronze Age deposits in this region were mostly found with bracelets or breast ornaments, so the excavation of these ax tips is an “archaeological miracle”, says Ihor Strzok.

The discovery sheds light on cultures that existed in Poland more than 3,000 years ago.
In the near future, the axes will be transported to the Archaeological Museum in Gdańsk for research and preservation.
