It can also cause hypertension in the arteries of the lungs and heart, and due to the additional pressure in the brain, significant brain damage, neurological and cognitive impairment, and even death. Darren Orbach and his colleagues are currently conducting a clinical trial to evaluate the possibility of treating the condition before birth. The “first patient” was a fetus at the 34th week of a woman’s pregnancy – they used ultrasound to perform the embolization procedure. The procedure led to premature rupture of the fetal membranes in the uterus, however, when the child was born, her cardiovascular system was functioning normally. Because the birth was premature, the baby had to stay in the neonatal intensive care unit for several weeks, during which doctors continued to monitor the state of her brain. However, the baby did not need additional support or surgery. Doctors did not see any signs of neurological disorders, fluid accumulation or bleeding, so the mother and baby were discharged and sent home. “As this is the first patient in an ongoing clinical trial, the method is not yet ready for widespread use. One successful case is not enough to establish a pattern of success. Future cases of treatment may not be as smooth; whether the pros outweigh the risks of the procedure remains to be seen.” , the doctors say.
