For the first time in Ukraine, lungs and heart were transplanted simultaneously to one person

The first heart-lung transplant in Ukraine was performed in Lviv. Only 20-25 such operations are performed in the world per year.
This was reported in the First Medical Association of Lviv.
38-year-old Nina from the Kyiv region received the organs. She had a heart defect from birth. The woman waited for a transplant for 15 years, 9 months of which were in India.
“Every year it becomes more and more difficult for me to live, I can barely climb to the third floor. I just want to try how to live normally, what a full life is. This is a chance for me, which I grab, to just… breathe” , – said the woman before the operation.

The transplant lasted 10 hours. The heart and lungs started working on the operating table.
“The person got a chance at life, we are happy, but very quietly, because the surgical stage is only a part of the journey.” – says Oleg Samchuk, general director of the First Medical Association.
Nina is currently in intensive care. Her condition is stable.
An 18-year-old boy who was in a road accident became a posthumous donor. His injuries turned out to be incompatible with life.
In addition to the heart and lungs, doctors also transplanted a liver and both kidneys, one of which the child received.

“We have been preparing for this operation for more than three years. First we started transplanting hearts, then lungs. And finally, a heart-lung organ complex.
It was extremely difficult to reach this stage, but we did it, Ukrainian medicine did it! Now we are also performing an operation that is performed in few places in the world.” – noted Roman Domashich, head of the department of cardiac surgery and heart transplantation at the St. Panteleimon Hospital.
We will remind you that earlier we wrote that in Lviv, a 9-month-old baby became a posthumous donor for a 5-year-old girl.
