In the United States, charges were brought against the pilot who tried to shut down the engine of the plane with passengers on board. He is accused of 83 attempted murders.

The incident occurred on October 22 on the Embraer 175 plane of the Alaska Airlines subsidiary. The flight departed from Everett, Washington, and was bound for San Francisco.
The crew later reported a “security threat involving an off-duty Alaska Airlines pilot.”

The man tried to start the plane’s fire-fighting system. It contains handles that, when switched, close the valves in the wings and cut off the fuel supply to the engines.
“After they are switched, some fuel remains. The quick response of our crew, who returned the levers to their original position, restored the fuel supply and prevented fuel starvation.” – told Alaska Airlines.
The crew apprehended the intruder and landed the plane in Portland, Oregon.
44-year-old Joseph David Emerson, an Alaska Airlines pilot, is suspected of the crime. On the plane, he was sitting in the folding seat in the cockpit, on his way to San Francisco for work.
Emerson is accused of:
- 83 attempted murders;
- 83 cases of creating danger to people;
- one case of creating a danger to the aircraft.
Emerson has worked for Alaska Airlines since 2001 on and off. He has never been denied certification. The man had his last medical examination last month.
In custody, Emerson said that he fell into depression for about six months. He denied taking any drugs.
A law enforcement source told CNN that the authorities do not consider the incident to be a terrorist act or ideologically motivated violence. Previously, according to the investigators, the pilot’s actions could be the result of a mental disorder.
