Fukushima, hijacking, podcast with a killer: the most interesting series of July

[ad_1]

Recently, the number of new interesting series has exceeded all expectations, going far beyond the boundaries of the specified selection. Determining the best was a very difficult job. And a new source has also been added – the SkyShowtime streaming channel, in which multimedia and multinational media giants Comcast and ViacomCBS combine the productions of various Hollywood studios, TV channels and Internet providers, such as Universal, Paramount, Paramount+, Nickelodeon, DreamWorks Animation and others, including and new series, such as the Polish “Warshavyanka”. In Ukraine, it can also be connected, but you will have to watch the content in the original language. We also want to give the viewer the opportunity to watch multinational content, so our selection is traditionally diverse: this time it includes representatives from South Korea, Japan, the USA, Argentina, Great Britain and the already mentioned Poland. Enjoy! Based on a True Story Screening: Peacock, USA A brilliant social comedy in which caustic humor eats out the eyes of Americans, showing the rotten basis of their beautiful picture of a rich and precious life. In the center of the plot is a “link of society” – a spouse. The husband humiliates himself as a tennis teacher, recalling the only match he ever won against Federer, and the wife – unable to put together a price, trying to sell real estate while pregnant. Unexpectedly, she recognizes a serial killer in her plumber, and right away, together with her husband, she comes up with a “brilliant” idea for monetization – to make a podcast about the killer’s actions with him as an interviewer. And the killer agrees… after some time, thanking his employer: “Thousands of fans write to me, I can be myself for the first time in my life! And all this is thanks to you!” The plot makes somersaults, the tension increases, the fantasies and fears of the characters are visualized, and then the comedy jumps into a thriller and spills out into a horror film… A special magnetism is created by the performer of the role of the killer, Tom Bateman, engraved in the memory of the audience at least after the role of a psychiatrist in the series “In in her eyes.” Hounds (Sayanggaedeul) Screening: Netflix, South Korea For fans of Korean action movies with clear and easy-to-use content, created to order by Netflix. In fact, we have the idea of ”Taxi Driver” that has been triumphantly going around the world for two seasons: the group revenge of a victim of unprovoked aggression against a larger group of criminals. Only now there are two in the main role at once – boxer friends, different in character, but resistant to challenges in achieving the goal. And now the screenwriters have given them comrades-in-arms from a not-so-virtuous past, well-known and skilled bandits, to help them. Thus, “Hounds” is a scaled “Taxi Driver”, except for the already melodramatic moments. Plus the high quality of action scenes and the action genre in general, which, however, does not take up 100% of the screen time, giving the opportunity to thoroughly show the relationships of the heroes. And the relationship is an important, developed component of the series in the best-traditions-of-drama. How two friends, being opposites in character, got together, who had a past, personal and sports, how they are doing in the present – it’s all pleasant, professional and with an unambiguous happy ending. Who does not get annoyed by ambiguity – the buzz is guaranteed. Days Show: Netflix, Japan The accident at the Fukushima plant has been compared to Chernobyl, but there is a difference. And this difference is worked out in maximum detail in “Those Days”, in which the main virtue is thoroughness in reproducing every step of the extremely thorough, meticulous and responsible Japanese. Along with this, the main minus is the same: unlike the American “Chernobyl” from HBO, where it was about an accident at a Ukrainian station, and it happened dynamically actively and dramatically tensely, with a galloping heartbeat, the series about “Fukushima” from Netflix is slow and almost boring. You have to get used to it. Because this is only the reverse side of the movement of the plot, the story without taking into account the details is extremely close and awe-inspiring for us. The system of relations between the boss and the subordinate is different, the attitude to life and danger is different, and, of course, the material and technical world is different. Although we are familiar with their problems. For example, such mundane in their human nature as a “specialist” in the operation of the reactor, who turns out to be just an economist, because when they hired a specialist, they didn’t have what they needed. Gangs of Buenos Aires (Barrabrava) Screening: Amazon Prime, Argentina-Uruguay Neither to the British “Gangs of London”, nor even to the American “Warrior”, where there were Chinese gangs of San Francisco, “Gangs of Buenos Aires” has no relationship. Rather, to the Polish “Furiosa”, because we are talking about a football gang, just from the capital of Argentina. In close contact with reality, the series tells about the mysterious space of football and the football field, which are only an excuse for racketeering, corruption and violence. Football fans here are the usual gangsters, and they are the ones who crush the entire football-related business – selling food at the stadium, drug dealing, and even participating in the matches of certain players. Even the result of the game itself! Football is the world, and fans and football players are players in the game of gangsters, the mayor and fate. All of this is filmed quickly, harshly and painfully, because the viewer sees poor neighborhoods, people on the verge of survival and a fanatical passion for football. “Your father and your uncle,” says the main character’s mother, “both wanted their ashes scattered over the stands of the stadium.” He disperses when both die, and he has to fight for the place of the leader of the gang. Interesting. The Bear Show: FX, USA The appearance of the 1st season of “The Bear” last year was a pleasant surprise in the serial family. A cute, witty and masterful variety on the subject of restaurants and cooking. But the 2nd is already an adult and more serious project, which makes the restaurant and its employees a small society with a rich personal background of everyone. The meaning of Charmy’s (Jeremy Allen White) return from New York to his home in Chicago and dismissal from a restaurant with a Michelin “star” materializes in the form of the idea of a full-fledged own restaurant and obtaining a “star” through the collective efforts of friends. To do this, you will have to borrow $500,000, demolish all the walls of a once-popular eatery among the poor, send an employee to Copenhagen to study desserts and draw up a general original menu. The pleasure of watching the repair, cooking and relationships of all those involved in all this is also born due to the interesting approach of the creators – each of the 10 episodes of the season has a different time length (from 30 to 60 minutes) and different dynamics: from chamber melancholy to dramatic explosiveness. Fine. Warszhawianka Screening: SkyShowtime, Poland Funny and sad, provocative and vital, the series is a kind of glorification of the dark sides of Warsaw. In particular, how well you can get drunk to your heart’s content every day. Before us is the story of a Lovelas writer, the creator of one successful book. However, after her broken glory. The series is reminiscent of the literary, erotic stories of Henry Miller and Charles Bukowski, unbroken talented drunken writers. Franek (Boris Shyts) has written off, but has not yet slept, sometimes staying above the bottom of the bottle only because of his daughter, his only value on earth. He has a task to write a new book, which he does not want to do. Instead, he has his own bar, once bought with royalties from his first book. Not to drink it and stay afloat is not an easy task, even if the father of the main character is a famous and popular artist. After all, a promiscuous lifestyle and an attractive appearance for women create a problem for life. Combining elements of “Californication” with David Duchovny and “Drunken” with Mickey Rourke, “Warshavianka” is more brash and sharp-tongued, self-revealing and critical. Hijack Screening: Apple TV+, Great Britain Despite the somewhat difficult originality of the hijacking plot, Jim Field Smith, responsible for the stunning international quadro-series “Criminal”, managed “excellent” already in the first two episodes. Here, the story of one of the passengers, who, unexpectedly for the victim, shows a desire to help the criminals is added to the very intrigue of why a bunch of British-Arab men-women hijacked the Dubai-London flight. Kaif creates both the performance of the actor, the charismatic Idris Elba, and his character. Unlike the untalented negotiator from The Nutcracker, who was shot after his first failure, Elba’s hero was not in vain invited by corporations in difficult cases of deadlocks to conclude deals: he invents a complex but convincing system where criminals play his game and passengers they play the same role as chess pieces in it, moving from place to place at his cunning will. After the Swedish “The Rapture”, which was surprisingly rejected by the audience, “The Intercepted Flight” returns attention to the “thriller in closed space”. Confidently. We must immediately add two TV series, which, unfortunately, “did not fit” into the list with recommendations of the best. The first is the German “Blue and Black”, a crime comedy fantasy based on fairy tales, but actually quite true stories. The second is the Israeli “Carthage”, where the anecdotal connection alone is attractive: in one camp in 1942, the British imprisoned Nazis, fascists and Jewish nationalists together. And we must also add the extraordinary “Crowded Room” with Tom Holland, although it is better not to know anything about it in advance, because, similar in concept to M. Night Shyamalan’s films, it has an interesting ending. We also advise you to pay attention to the cute British “Men’s Striptease” and the American documentary “Arnold” about Schwarzenegger.
