Researchers from the Ukrainian Scientific Institute of Harvard University have created a site that collects online resources with original research on the history of Ukraine.
The goal of the “Fontes: Open Access Sources for Ukrainian History” project is to unite the public around the study of Ukraine’s past, the Institute reports.
The name “Fontes” comes from the Latin “source”. The Institute says that it correlates with the fact that all resources posted on the site are freely available to everyone.
“Students, researchers and inquisitive citizens can find sources about the entire history of Ukraine: from the ancient Scythians to Kievan Rus, from the Cossack Hetmanship to the Soviet period and the revolutions and wars of the XXI century”, – noted in the institution.

The project unites various websites containing primary research sources. Each resource has online collections that can be accessed from anywhere in the world.
All collections also have archival documents, books, periodicals, photographs, and films. Users can browse collections by various tags – you can choose region, era, source format, language, etc.
According to the creators of the project, the COVID-19 pandemic and the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia, which made the usual access to historical archives difficult, led to its implementation.
The researchers note that they are open to adding new sources, so anyone who wants to can get involved by filling out the form on the site.
