In the city of Derby, in Great Britain, a man who kept his friend’s body in a freezer for two years was sentenced to two years in prison.
As the Guardian writes, 53-year-old Damion Johnson admitted to obstructing the legal and dignified burial of the body of 71-year-old John Wainwright. The man explained his act by the fact that he was “struck by grief” and did not want to let his friend go.
71-year-old Wainwright died in September 2018 and was found only in August 2020 in a freezer on the premises of a skip (load-lifting) company.
According to the prosecutor, Johnson had known Wainwright for 27 years, and in 2015 moved into his apartment as a caretaker. Johnson described their relationship as a “strong friendship” and regarded Wainwright as a father figure.

“The defendant says he wasn’t thinking rationally and wasn’t ready to let Mr. Wainwright go. He couldn’t tell the authorities afterward.”the prosecutor said.
In September 2018, Johnson ordered a freezer and told Wainwright’s family and friends that the funeral had already taken place. At the same time, he did not contact the authorities and did not receive a death certificate.
At the same time, Johnson used his friend’s bank card to buy goods and withdraw cash for almost two years.
In December 2019, the man was arrested during the investigation of another case. The police did not search the apartment, but Johnson was forbidden to return there: the apartment was closed and the freezer was turned off. When law enforcement returned to investigate, they smelled a strong odor.
In August 2020, the freezer was moved to the territory of the company that was engaged in skips. At the time, the police thought it had rotten food. The workers found the body there.
