Sociologists have studied how Ukrainians treat internally displaced people, those who were forced to leave abroad, Russian-speaking citizens and people who found themselves under occupation. 46% of respondents are completely tolerant of refugees, another 42% agree that they should return to Ukraine (87% in total). In general, 90% of Ukrainians sympathize with refugees living abroad and do not condemn them. The index of social distance in the attitude towards refugees was estimated at 3.67, which is below the average (4.00) for 13 ethnic groups, the attitude towards which is constantly studied. Only 5% have a xenophobic attitude towards immigrants (the same number as towards Ukrainian-speaking Ukrainians). The situation with IDPs looks quite satisfactory, experts say. The social distance index is 3.73. 44% of respondents are ready to allow these people into their environment, another 46% agree that they should live in Ukraine (90% in total). Only 10% of people have a xenophobic attitude towards Ukrainians who were under occupation. In September 2022, 12% of KMIS respondents believed that Ukrainians in the occupation supported the Russians or were indifferent to Ukraine. At the same time, the majority (72%) stated that people under occupation are victims of circumstances and are waiting for the return of the Ukrainian authorities. In December 2022, in a similar survey, 83% expressed sympathy for such Ukrainians, and 6% – condemnation. In general, the situation with the attitude towards the occupied citizens looks satisfactory, say sociologists. The survey was conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) from February 22 to March 6, 2023. It was attended by 985 adult respondents (respectively, in the first and second waves) who live in all regions of Ukraine (except the Autonomous Republic of Crimea). The sample did not include residents of territories that were not temporarily controlled by the authorities of Ukraine until February 24, 2022 (AR Crimea, the city of Sevastopol, certain areas of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions), and the survey was not conducted with citizens who left the country after February 24, 2022 .
