Independence of Ukraine is supported by the absolute majority of citizens – 89% of respondents. 63% of Ukrainians call Independence Day their favorite and important holiday. Sociologists note that in the 1990s, an average of 64% supported independence and 32% wanted unification with Russia, and in the 2000s, an average of 73% supported independence and 23% wanted unification with Russia. During the years of independence in Ukraine, the value of freedom and sovereignty from the neighboring occupying country increased significantly. In addition to understanding Independence, most people consider the holiday of the same name to be an important day for Ukraine. For Ukrainians, Independence Day is now the most important non-religious holiday. The next most popular is the Day of Defenders of Ukraine. For comparison, in 2013, Independence Day was the most important or favorite holiday for only 12% of Ukrainians. But after 10 years, it entered the top three most important holidays and is second only to the two main religious holidays. So the rating of holidays for Ukrainians in 2023 looks like this: Easter (marked by 70% of respondents); Christmas (celebrated by 69% of Ukrainians); Independence Day (63% of respondents emphasized an important date); Defender’s Day (54% of Ukrainians celebrated the holiday); New Year (52% of Ukrainians consider it a holiday). The least popular holidays this year are Victory Day and Labor Day (May 1) – only 13% and 5% of Ukrainians celebrate these dates as favorite or important.
