77% of displaced children witnessed shelling and bombing, 73% were in a shelter, and almost 30% survived the occupation. This is evidenced by the data of the study “Children and War”, conducted by the charitable organization SOS Children’s Villages. 4% of young Ukrainians passed through Russian filtration camps, and about 8% of children survived hunger and lack of access to drinking water. More than 50% cannot find a job in a new place, 36% have problems with housing, 34% have an acute problem with warm things,” says Andriy Chernousov. expert of the Kharkiv Institute of Social Research. According to the researchers, 33% of IDPs faced discrimination in new communities because of their status, and 21% experienced discrimination when looking for and trying to rent housing. Scientists also emphasize the insufficient number of social specialists, and sometimes their complete absence in certain territories. The organization notes that since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, more than 5 million internally displaced persons have been registered. According to unofficial data, the number of IDPs is much higher and amounts to more than 7 million people. These are mostly families with children from Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk and Kherson regions. During the research, more than 300 interviews were conducted with internally displaced families from all over Ukraine. In addition, specialists of the Kharkiv Institute of Social Research conducted in-depth interviews with experts in the field of children’s rights and protection. The survey is exploratory and shows the situation and main problems of families with children after displacement, which require humanitarian response and assistance.
