How screen time affects infant development: research

In one-year-old children who spent more than 4 hours in front of the screen per day, there was a delay in the development of fine motor skills, personal and social skills. These problems disappeared between the ages of 2 and 4. This is evidenced by the results of a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association of Pediatrics, writes The New York Times. The research was conducted in Japan from July 2013 to March 2017. Scientists surveyed 7,097 women who had recently given birth. Only 4% of babies were in front of screens for 4 or more hours a day. Typically, these women were first-time mothers, had lower incomes, or experienced postpartum depression. 18% of respondents noted that their children consumed information from the screen for less than 4 hours, but the majority emphasized that their baby was in front of the screen for less than 2 hours a day. The study found a connection: the longer babies spent in front of the screen, the greater the likelihood of delayed speech, fine motor skills, and personal skills. As David J. Lewkovich, a developmental psychologist at the Yale Children’s Center, explained, the personal interaction between parent and child is critical to an infant’s learning about the world. Therefore, he advises to talk to your child face to face as much as possible. After all, a child receives information during contact with adults: facial expressions, words, tone of voice and physical feedback. But this does not happen when the child is looking at the screen.
