Italian singer and poet-songwriter Toto Cutugno, famous far beyond the borders of his country, especially with the hit “L’Italiano”, died on August 22 at the age of 80, his manager Danilo Mancuso told the Italian agency ANSA. Coutugno died at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan. He was ill for a long time.
As the BBC writes, he was taught music by his father, who served in the navy and himself played the trumpet in a military band. Toto started with the drums, then played drums and mastered the accordion, but never got to the piano due to the high cost of the instrument.
Toto began to participate in music competitions at the age of 13, and soon he began to create his own groups. In 1965, he organized the group Toto ei Tati, in which he performed as a drummer and was so successful in this that he received a contract with the major record company Carosello Records.
The first real success came to Toto Cutugno in 1977 with the song Donna Mia, written together with Mike Bongiorno.
At the same time, Coutugno wrote many songs for celebrities such as Johnny Hallyday and Dalida. And his song Solo, performed by Adriano Celentano, did not leave the top of the charts for many months.
In 2019, Ukrainian deputies demanded that he be banned from entering the country because of the singer’s pro-Russian sympathies. This requirement was not fulfilled.
