Ukrainian center in Croatia

Alina Nasibyan, curator of the Favbet Foundation

“An important step of the foundation was the opening in April 2022 of the Adaptation Center for immigrants from Ukraine in Zagreb, Croatia. People were given the opportunity to learn Croatian and English for free, which further facilitated rapid adaptation. It took less than a week to realize this idea.

The center united entire families and people who were able to find support in the most difficult time for each of us

”, says the curator of the Favbet Foundation charity Alina Nasibyan.

Now, after more than a year and a half, language courses are no longer so urgent. Few Ukrainians who have just decided to move to Croatia visit them, says Alina’s colleague Marianna Kovenia.

“The “Chervona Kalina” center is currently a meeting place for almost 1.5 thousand people. They come here to communicate, spend leisure time with “their” friends, make friends, volunteer, etc.

But given the large number of events and activities, it is a center not only of cultural leisure, but also of ethnicity.”

– says Marianna Kovenia.

So, for example, older women meet for tea or coffee, knit socks for the Armed Forces and discuss life moments.

“Many visitors to the center are also volunteers. For example, the Croatian teacher Slavica is a third-generation ethnic Ukrainian. Her family preserved the Ukrainian language, so she speaks it fluently.

Slavitsa is one of the center’s most respected and systematic volunteers, because she has been helping Ukrainians since day one,” says the curator of the Favbet Foundation.

In the center, Ukrainian women also organize art therapy for children and adults, conduct fitness classes and hold events – Ukrainian Language Day, Embroidery Day, etc.

There are many activities for children – drawing competitions, preschool classes. They also conducted training for students of the 1st-2nd grade (Ukrainian language, mathematics, reading), so that the young Ukrainians who went to the Croatian school would not forget their native language and get a quality education.

“We hope that our flower, our future – our children will return home later. Therefore, we strive to make sure that in the first years of schooling the child can acquire the basis of the Ukrainian language, be able to read, write and speak fluently,” Marianna explains.
