Human rights activists ask the court in The Hague to reclassify the case of deportation of children as “genocide”

The Kharkiv human rights group demands that the International Criminal Court in The Hague reclassify the case regarding the deportation of Ukrainian children from the article “War crimes” to the article “Genocide”.

Human rights defenders have already prepared a submission to the ICC Prosecutor’s Office regarding the need to reclassify the proceedings.

Mykola Komarovskyi, a lawyer of the Kharkiv human rights group, stated this during a press conference at the Ukraine-Ukrinform Media Center, Ukrinform reports.

This submission takes into account cases of illegal adoptions of Ukrainian children by Russian officials.

Previous submissions to the International Criminal Court were aimed at providing information on the crimes of the Russian Federation, and the International Criminal Court already had to qualify these actions.

“We have an objective side, where we describe the facts, that is, what was committed, and then there is the justification of other aspects of the crime of genocide”– said Komarovsky.

Lawyers provide the ICC with the information it needs to indicate that the crime of genocide is taking place.

Komarovsky believes that the “point of reference” in this matter can be considered Putin’s adoption of a decree that simplified the granting of Russian citizenship to Ukrainian children.

We will remind you that earlier this year, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, and the Ombudsman for Children’s Rights, Maria Lvova-Belova, in connection with the abduction of Ukrainian children.

Currently, the Ukrainian authorities are aware of at least 19,500 children deported by Russia.

Also, according to Kateryna Rashevska, a lawyer at the Regional Center for Human Rights, the Russians illegally adopted at least 400 deported Ukrainian children.
