In Great Britain, a new law on Internet security was adopted. In particular, it provides that people who watch pornography will have to scan their faces to verify their age.

The new requirements are aimed at preventing minors from accessing porn sites, according to Ofcom, the British government watchdog. It says that verifying the age of users should go beyond simply clicking the “I’m 18” button.

The adopted law requires sites with pornographic content to ensure that minors cannot view porn. Ofcom considers it acceptable to estimate age by scanning users’ faces and use software to determine whether they are adults.

If a person appears to be under the age of 18, porn sites may ask for proof of age in other ways, including sending a government-issued photo ID, such as a passport or driver’s license.

Critics of the new rules say they threaten user privacy and could have “disastrous” consequences if age verification data ends up online.

Research by the Office of the Commissioner for Children in England, conducted in 2021-2022, shows that most children first see pornography on the Internet at the age of 13. More than a quarter of them come across it before the age of 11, and one in ten – at the age of 9.

“We expect all services, regardless of their approach, to offer reliable protection to children so that they cannot come across pornography. We also hope that they will ensure that the rights to privacy and freedom of adults to access legal content were complied with”, says Melanie Dawes, director general of Ofcom.

We will remind, in Spain, attackers used AI to generate photos of naked underage girls.
