Scientists note that Brazil and Colombia have lost a record number of forests – there, forest areas have decreased by 36 and 49%, respectively, compared to 2022.

Record figures were also in Canada, where forest fires destroyed more than 8 million hectares.

In Bolivia, during the past year, the forest area has decreased by 27% compared to 2022. It is noted that this indicator sets a new record in the country for the third year in a row.

The Democratic Republic of Congo has lost more than half a million hectares of primary rainforest.

At the same time, in tropical countries, forest areas remained at the level of recent years, and in some places even increased, scientists note.

According to the report, 51% of the reasons for the disappearance of forests are related to fires, the rest – to human activities.

Deforestation also has a devastating effect on the ecosystem. According to the researchers, countries should follow the example of Brazil and Colombia, which have achieved minimum figures for deforestation.
