In the center of Odesa, in the “Cafe de Fleur” establishment, they refused to serve the client Lyudmila in Ukrainian and kicked her out of the establishment. According to the woman, the incident happened on the evening of February 16 at around 9 p.m. As Ludmila explained, she is the head of the language protection and mastery department at the public organization “We’re making you nervous”. “We check institutions for compliance with the language law,” Lyudmila explained. When Lyudmila entered the middle, she was given a non-state menu. “I was approached by a waiter who spoke to me in Russian. I made a remark to him and asked why he was not speaking to me in the official language. He said that he could switch if necessary. And then the owner of the establishment intervened in the conversation,” – says the inspection participant. Together with his friends, he began to promote stereotypes that Odessans are a separate nation, and they communicate exclusively in Russian. Then he declared that he was not going to provide services in Ukrainian. “After that, I said that such people have their own tools of influence, with a hint of the police. They asked me to leave the institution. They were supposed to be closing, but according to the schedule, they should have worked until 10 p.m.,” Lyudmila continues. I called the police and filed a complaint against this facility. It should reach the language ombudsman. I want to note that we checked quite a few establishments, but this is a single case of refusal to switch to the state language by both the waiter and the owner. Usually the institutions understand their responsibility and carry out “work on mistakes,” adds the Odesa woman. She says that she will definitely return to this institution soon to bring Ukrainianization to its logical conclusion. The representative of the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language, Yaroslava Vitko-Prysiazhniuk, said that the owner of the Odessa institution “Cafe de Fleur” drew up an administrative protocol for violating the law on the state language. She noted that “kicking a client out of the institution for asking to be served in the state language is more than a violation of the language law.” We will remind, from July 16, 2022 in Ukraine Administrative responsibility for violation of the Language Law has been introduced. The fine is from 3,400 to 8,500 gr. n, if the violation is committed for the first time. For repeated violations within a year, the fine will increase to UAH 8,500-11,900.
