In Florida, a man played rock music on his guitar while having a brain tumor removed. And this is what the doctors advised him to do.

Professional guitarist Christian Nolen performed hits by Deftones and System of a Down while conscious during brain surgery, WSVN Miami and The Messenger reported.

“It was like being out of this world, like waking up and seeing people actively working inside your head. It’s a crazy feeling.”said the musician.

The unusual operation took place in the oncology center named after Sylvester at the University of Miami in early January.

Doctors performed a craniotomy (trepanning of the skull) to remove a tumor from the right frontal lobe of Nolen’s brain.

This operation is performed while the patient is awake in order to properly assess his condition.

“When we were finishing the operation on the very end of the tumor, we noticed that the function of his hand started to deteriorate.

The tumor was touching and interacting with the part of the brain that controls arm movements. Fortunately, we managed to remove the entire tumor without damaging the arm.”– said doctor Ricardo Komotar, who performed the operation.

The story of guitarist Christian Nolen’s treatment began with troubling symptoms affecting the left side of his body.

It was difficult for the musician to play the guitar and use his left hand in general.

“I lost sensation all over my left side. From the waist up I couldn’t move my arm, my face started to distort.” – said the man.

Doctors discovered a glioma in Nolen’s right frontal lobe, the area of the brain that controls movement and cognitive abilities.

Ten days later, the man underwent surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine to remove the tumor and restore brain function.

However, these types of surgical interventions carry great risks. If too much tissue is removed, it can permanently disrupt some important brain functions.

To avoid this, doctors operate on the patient in a state of alertness, while he performs some task.

If something goes wrong, doctors notice it immediately and can fix it.

“When a tumor is in or near a critical part of the brain – something that controls the ability to speak, understand speech or move – we do awake surgery to constantly monitor the patient to see if the normal brain functions begin to be disrupted “, – added Ricardo Komotar.

We will remind you that in April 2023, Lviv doctors performed brain surgery on a child with awakening for the first time in the history of Ukrainian medicine.
