Military serviceman Oleksandr Yurchenko lost his sight right on the battlefield and walked blindly through the forest in search of his brothers. He courageously accepted the news that he would never be able to see again.

His story was told in the Nezlamni rehabilitation center.

36-year-old Oleksandr comes from the city of Pryluky, in the Chernihiv region. He went to war as a volunteer.

At the end of November 2023, the fighter was seriously wounded while in the Kupyansk direction. Oleksandr came under mortar shelling, during which his hands and face were cut. He remembers – his eyes turned black immediately.

After that, Oleksandr had to walk blindly through the plantation. He miraculously came across the dugout of “his”. From there, the soldier was evacuated to one of the Kharkiv hospitals.

According to Alexander, he did not even ask if he would see again. The man immediately realized that he had lost his sight forever.

“I’m not one to give up. Life goes on,” said Oleksandr.

Currently, the soldier is undergoing rehabilitation and adapting to life in new circumstances. An occupational therapist works with him, who teaches the soldier to navigate in space, recognize household objects and use a computer.

As noted in the Nezlamni center, rehabilitation of the blind is a very popular field. According to the National Health Service of Ukraine, only from February 2022 to July 2023, almost 39,000 people were diagnosed with blindness and low vision for the first time.

We will remind you that in Lviv they are rescuing a defender who lost his legs in the war, taking the hit of an enemy grenade.
