Israeli police have arrested five people on suspicion of spitting at Christian pilgrims or at churches in the Old City of Jerusalem.
This is reported by CNN.
Four people were arrested for the incidents on Wednesday, October 4, and one more for the incident earlier in the week. One of the suspects is a minor.
Police say it happened after reports of Orthodox Jews spitting on Christian pilgrims. This fact is confirmed by a viral video filmed on Monday, October 2.
The law enforcement officers specified that all persons have different charges. One of the violators was detained for assault, because he spat at a person. Others simply spat into a crowd of people, so they fall under the category of hooliganism.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu strongly condemned any attempt to harm believers.
“Israel is fully committed to protecting the sacred right of worship and pilgrimage to holy sites of all faiths”he added.
The narrow streets of the Old City surround some of the holiest sites for Jews, Christians and Muslims. Local communities have long found ways to co-exist despite regular outbreaks of tension between believers, especially during religious and national holidays.
According to Reuters, the police will continue to use CCTV cameras, patrols and internet monitoring to combat the phenomenon both in real time and in the past, and may start imposing special administrative fines.
