The legendary Publishers Forum is taking place for the thirtieth time: why go to it and what to look for there

Is it worth going to a literary festival when there is no time and resources for anything, when books can be bought online at cost price, when, after all, there is no time to read these books? All these questions are irrelevant for lovers of Ukrainian literature when it comes to the Lviv Publishers Forum. It is worth it, because there are authors whose books are already taught in schools and whose songs have already become hits!
They went to the Forum precisely because there you can touch the future literary canon: meet them in a coffee shop in the center of Lviv, get an autograph, listen to intelligent or witty reasoning live.
The main difference of the Wartime Forum is that now not all people who have the potential to enter the literary canon can be met live in Lviv. Someone went to serve in the Armed Forces, someone actively volunteers. And the events of the Forum are posthumously dedicated to some of them. For example, a Lviv-Kyiv writer Victoria Ameliniawho was killed by a Russian missile attack on Kramatorsk.
War permeates everything in Ukraine, and the oldest literary festival was no exception. However, the war is paradoxical – on the one hand, it has poisoned our entire being today, on the other hand, it is like a concrete mixture, gluing together the renewed Ukrainian society.
Rewriting the future based on the dramatic experience that united us is the overarching theme of the 30th Publishers’ Forum. It opens today with the presentation of the book “The Most Terrible Days of My Life” with reports on Russia’s biggest war crimes in Ukraine by journalists from the project The Reckoning Project.
October 5 the topic is continued by the conversation “War as the collapse of civilization: will there be happiness after the war?” with the participation of the author of the book “Red Hunger” Anne Applebaumliterary experts Tatyana Ogarkovaresearchers of communist regimes Slavenka Drakulicha philosopher Vakhtanga Kebuladze.
October 6 the theme of the war will be revealed as a decolonial war – in a discussion from Ukrainian Pravda “How does the Russian attack on Ukraine change our view of colonialism and decolonization?” Its participants are philosophers Volodymyr Yermolenkoa researcher of Western colonialism Mishra Pankaj and the editor-in-chief of UP Sevgil Musaeva.
October 7 one of the main presentations of the Forum of Publishers will take place – the book “Russian-Ukrainian War”. Its author is a famous historian Sergey Plokhiy, whose historical research in English reveals Ukrainian history to foreign readers. This time he analyzes the full-scale invasion of Russia: how does the unification of the West and the complete isolation of Russia take place against the background of all these events? What will be the consequences of the war for Ukraine, Russia, Europe and the world?
As can be seen at least from the mentioned events (and there are almost one and a half hundred of them in the program), the Publishers Forum is trying not to lose its international status. Despite the threat of shelling and blackouts, foreign writers go to Lviv. Those who do not come will join online.
This time, as in the previous year, he has a meaningful British literary partnership Hay Festivalwhich will allow broadcasting the events of the Forum to a wide international audience.
However, war is an all-encompassing, but not the only, theme of the Lviv Forum. In the program you can find a wide variety of events, for example, the presentation of the publication about Franz Xaver Mozart; conversation with Natalia Gurnytska about the film success of her debut novel “Coffee with Cardamom”; a cocktail party from the publishing house Vivat, dedicated to the series of Ukrainian classics; stand up Anastasia Zukhvalwho is a guest of the Forum.
The Publishers Forum also does not lose hope of remaining an important market event for publishers, and despite the risks and restrictions of martial law, organized a book fair in which fifty Ukrainian publishing houses participate. However, this time in an unusual location – in the park near the Powder Tower. The Powder Tower itself became one of the main locations for discussions and meetings.
“The Powder Tower is a majestic structure that represents a strong connection between the past and the present, holding the defense for the sake of the future, which perfectly correlates with this year’s focal theme “Census of the Future”, – explained in the Forum.
