Archaeologists excavating the acropolis of the ancient Greek city of Elea found a well-preserved helmet.

This is reported by Heritage Daily.

During excavations in the sanctuary, a well-preserved ancient Greek helmet was discovered, the third of its kind found in the ancient city.

According to researchers, the helmet was probably brought to Athena for safekeeping after the battle or during the war.

Elea was founded by the Greeks around 538–535 BC on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea in the modern province of Salerno, Italy.

The city was known as a center of philosophy and learning.

Archaeologists are currently excavating the acropolis, where a sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Athena was discovered in 2022.

Athena was an ancient Greek goddess associated with wisdom, war and craft, often depicted wearing a helmet and wielding a spear.

The sanctuary was built after the Battle of Alalia during a war between the Greeks and the Etruscans allied with the Carthaginians between 540 and 535 BC.

Researchers also found the remains of a painted brick wall, possibly an early form of sanctuary, and polygonal blocks typical of ancient Greek architecture.

According to the researchers, another notable find is the discovery of pottery with the word “sacred,” further indicating the importance of the site.

In a press statement, Italy’s culture minister said the discovery of the Greek helmet and inscription underscores the need to invest in archaeological research to uncover “important fragments of Mediterranean history.”
