In Kharkiv, unknown persons damaged the figures of Polovtsian women, located next to the Kharkiv Historical Museum named after M.F. Sumtsova on Constitution Square.

It happened on the night of Thursday, November 2, reports the local publication Nakipilo.

The director of the museum, Olga Soshnikova, said that the museum employees noticed the damage, similar to traces of an ax, in the morning and immediately called the police.

There are traces of an ax on them, I’m just in shock. What a vandal you have to be to beat with such fury“, Soshnikova said.

Figures of Polovtsian women dating back to the 12th century were brought from the Izyum district and installed near the Historical Museum in 2013. Before that, they were located in the courtyard of the museum.

Currently, the restorers are engaged in preserving the chips on the figures, which are made of a fragile material – sandstone, in order to avoid additional damage from future precipitation: rain and snow.

Based on this fact, the investigators opened criminal proceedings under Part 1 of Article 194 (deliberate destruction or damage to property) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing. The police are establishing the circumstances of the event and the person involved in the crime“, the police of the Kharkiv region reported.

Polovtsian women from Izyum Oblast – these are unique burial stone statues of the Polovtsy people, monuments of sacred art of the IX-XIII centuries. They symbolized ancestors and were placed in sanctuaries on the tops of mounds or hills to honor them.

During the temporary occupation of the Izyum region in 2022, a photo appeared on the Internet in which the Russian occupiers attached the flag of the USSR to one of the Polovtsian women.

After the liberation of the region, it turned out that one of the buildings was destroyed by a direct hit by a Russian projectile. In November 2022, experts confirmed that only two out of nine Polovtsian women were not damaged during the occupation.

At that time, the Ministry of Culture expressed the opinion that the figures should be moved to the Historical Museum in Kharkiv. However, local residents were against the removal of Polovtsian women, so in July of this year they were preserved.
