Doctors of the Kyiv Center for Bone Marrow Transplantation have already performed 50 bone marrow transplants from unrelated donors. Among the 50 saved patients, the youngest was 7 months old, and the oldest was 57 years old. The Ministry of Health spoke about the first patient who received a bone marrow transplant from a non-family donor in Ukraine. “Nazarchyk is 4 years old. You can join the register of bone marrow donors by following the link. Who can become a bone marrow donor? Bone marrow donors can be men and women aged 18-35. Those aged 35-45 can join by paying for their DNA test. There are several requirements for donors: body weight is more than 50 kg; absence of chronic diseases or any other serious diseases; willingness to donate cells for any patient in need of a transplant. How to become a bone marrow donor? Register online Fill out the application form to receive a donor test kit. The Ukrainian registry of donors will send it to you by mail. Take the test “Use the test kit – rub the sticks on your cheeks and send them back to us in an envelope,” says the register. Wait for a match The process of finding a match is complicated, so it can be months or even years before you are contacted about donating. When your cells match the patient’s cells, you will get a chance to save a person’s life. We will remind you that a bone marrow transplant is the transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells of the bone marrow, which are able to restore normal hematopoiesis in patients. “When a person develops abnormal blood cells as a result of an illness, or normal cells are not formed at all – they must be replaced with healthy cells,” the registry informs. Some patients can undergo an autologous transplant – a transplant of stem cells collected from the patient’s own bloodstream. Others need an allogeneic transplant – a donation of cells from a blood relative (for example, a sibling) or from an unrelated donor. In 2020, the first bone marrow transplant from a non-family donor was performed in Ukraine. The very next year, bone marrow from a foreign donor was first transplanted into an adult Ukrainian woman. Currently, there are more than 8,000 potential donors in the Ukrainian registry. The greater the number of registered potential donors, the better the patients’ chances of recovery, say the Ministry of Health.
