20 cases of measles have been registered in Ukraine over the past six months. Despite the small number, doctors sound the alarm and call for vaccination, since the previous outbreak of the disease in 2017 also started with isolated cases. This was emphasized by Lyudmila Savchuk, head of the immunoprophylaxis department of the Kyiv City Center for Disease Control and Inspection of the Ministry of Health, during a briefing on July 20. She recalled that the previous outbreak in Kyiv began in 2017 after children attended New Year’s events. Even then, more than 8,500 minors fell ill. According to Savchuk, at that time, among all measles patients, approximately 90% did not have the appropriate vaccinations. It is important that parents, together with the family doctor, find out whether children have the appropriate number of vaccinations for their age. Savchuk reminded that children under the age of 6 should have one dose of the vaccine. After 6 – you need to enter the next one. If a six-year-old child does not have any vaccinations, then he should be vaccinated twice with an interval of one month. Parents are also advised to vaccinate their children against rubella and mumps. According to the head of the department of immunoprophylaxis, today Kyiv and all of Ukraine are provided with a high-quality vaccine that has proper storage conditions. The factor of war also affects the increase in the number of measles patients, she added. Earlier we wrote that the disease is transmitted very quickly by airborne droplets. It is accompanied by a significant increase in temperature, headache, runny nose, dry cough, an increase in lymph nodes and inflammation of the mucous membrane of the eyes. The disease can have a severe course. Patients often require hospitalization.
