The Verkhovna Rada committee supported the law on the English language, removing the regulations on cinema and television

The humanitarian committee of the parliament unanimously supported the presidential bill No. 9432 on the English language. However, the corresponding decision was made with the removal of all norms about cinema and television, said Volodymyr Vyatrovych, deputy of the “European Solidarity” faction. He noted that all points that could narrow the use of the Ukrainian language were removed from the document. In particular: the requirement to show English-language films in cinemas in the original language; changes to the law on cinematography; changes to the law on the state language in terms of cinema; changes to the media law on reducing the quota of Ukrainian-language programs. We will remind you that President Zelenskyi initiated a draft law on the use of the English language in Ukraine. It was registered on June 28. The document stated that the scope of the use of English will be expanded in the military, medical, transport systems, as well as in the field of culture. But Ukrainians were outraged by this innovation, as the draft law provided for an increase in the share of films in the original language. And instead of dubbing, there should have been only Ukrainian subtitles. The language ombudsman stated that this draft law violates the Constitution, because Ukrainians are not obliged to speak a language other than the state one. Ukrainians also created a petition for the preservation of Ukrainian dubbing. She received the required number of votes for consideration.
