On the tenth anniversary of the Revolution of Dignity, on November 21, a documentary film was presented in the capital’s National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War “Long Day” director Alan Badoev. This is a tape that was edited from testimonies about the beginning of a full-scale invasion, which Ukrainians themselves filmed on their own mobile phones.

From the stage before the screening of the film itself, Badoev said that his team received video materials from 12 thousand Ukrainians, in total, the mobile video they shot was about 200 hours long. “We collected tiny, tiny pieces, sometimes from crushed phones, sometimes from GoPro right from the front. Ukrainians entrusted us with their most intimate materials“, the director admitted.

He calls his film “a capsule of an important and difficult time” and emphasizes that he made it so that no one could ever “false our history, say that it was somehow different.”

“We didn’t shoot anything. Everything you see on the screen today is a document. These are just files that were sent to us and we made a tape out of them. Sometimes we received a file, put it on view and did not know how this story would end. That is, we started to look, fell in love with a person, and then understood that the person had already died“, Badoev said.

“The Long Day” begins with such a story. The first to appear on the screen is the family of photographer, videographer, eco-activist, co-founder of the environmental movement Chysto.de from Mukachevo, Roman Zhuk, who volunteered to defend the country at the beginning of a full-scale invasion and died at the front on May 26, 2022. First, the viewer is shown the life that Roman, his wife Elena, and their two young sons had before the Russian attack, and the tape will end with the news of his death and footage of his wife trying to continue her husband’s business.

The tape, created by Badoev together with 1+1 Ukraine, brings to the big screen the stories of Ukrainians from different parts of Ukraine: a woman from Mariupol who lives in a basement with her daughter and a dog, a young couple from Chernihiv whose apartment was destroyed by a Russian shell, a man from Kyiv region, whose father is shot in a car by a convoy of occupiers, a singer from Kharkiv who remains in the city attacked by the Russian Federation because she has no one to leave with, two military brothers, one of whom is wounded, and the other helps him not to lose faith in salvation.

However, the director admits that the story of the Zhuk family was key to the creation of the film: “Work on the film began with the story of Roman Zhuk and his family. And she was a starting point for me and the team. I fell in love with this sincere and modern Ukrainian family so much. And when at the end of the material I realized that Roma died, it was just a blow. It was at that moment that I realized that I wanted to show Ukrainians who should be on our land. For me, the Zhuk family is the best Ukrainians: free, modern, young, and those who take care of their land, and when necessary, go and defend it“.

Among the first viewers of “The Long Day” were many Ukrainian military and diplomatic representatives of almost all European states and partner states. Among the guests – head of the NATO representation in Ukraine Karen McTeer, commander of the National Guard Oleksandr Pivnenko, head of the National Police Ivan Vyhivskyi. Also guests from the director’s “star bubble” are bloggers, YouTube presenters.

Today you have come to a documentary about the war. This is quite a difficult path for my psyche and everything I loved in my life. I didn’t do it because I wanted to make a movie. I did it because I couldn’t keep quiet. Because it seemed to me that the world is bound to get tired and it is necessary to have a powerful answer to this tiredness“.
