In Kyiv, Vodokanal dumped chemicals into the river – eco-inspection

The Vodokanal in the Kyiv region discharged chemicals into the Skvirka, a tributary of the Ros River.

Thus, the nitrogen norm was exceeded 78 times, the State Environmental Inspection of the Capital District reported.

“The victory in the nomination “The greatest pollution of water resources in 2023″ goes to one of the Kyiv Oblast water utilities, which discharges water into the Skvirka River with an excess of ammonium content by 78 times!”– noted in the inspection.

The inspection was carried out as part of the Action Plan for the recovery and restoration of the Ros River. In the samples taken, discharge of return water to the Skvirka River was found. In addition to exceeding nitrogen standards, 6 more substances were also exceeded.

Now the Inspectorate will collect the necessary data to calculate the damages caused to the environment and file a claim against the enterprise.

Why did the inspections begin?

In March 2023, a petition to save the Ros River collected the necessary 25,000 votes.

“As a result of the devastating anthropogenic load, long-term ignoring of many requirements, even stipulated by law, lack of control over the implementation of urgent water protection and other measures, the threat of the death of this unique river is becoming more and more tangible.— note the authors of the appeal.

They also emphasized the mass death of fish and other living organisms and demanded a ban on swimming in this reservoir.

President Zelenskyy considered the petition and instructed the government to consider the issues raised in the appeal. Thus began a series of water quality checks in the river.
