In Lviv, a man committed an attempted murder because of a colleague’s remarks about the Russian language

A 33-year-old man who tried to kill a colleague because of remarks about the Russian language was tried in Lviv.
He was sentenced to 7 years of imprisonment, according to the Unified Register of Court Decisions.
The incident happened on July 14, 2022 in one of the apartments in Lviv. A 33-year-old native of Lysychansk was renovating it together with a colleague.
The victim told the court that his partner fell ill that day and the foreman gave him a new partner. Until lunch they worked and did not conflict, but at lunch the men drank alcohol and a conflict arose between them because of language.

The case file states that the Lviv native was indignant because the immigrant spoke Russian and did not go to fight.
“After drinking alcohol, the victim became indignant that the immigrant spoke Russian and did not fight for his land, but ran away from the war. This excited him greatly against the background of the events they had experienced with forced resettlement since the beginning of the war.
By speaking against him as a Russian-speaker, the Lviv man provoked him to aggressive actions. Therefore, after dinner, when the partner had already started work and sat down near the tools, the man from Lysychansk grabbed a knife in his emotions and hit him several times in the neck and chest area from the side“, the court verdict says.
The knife broke as a result of the blows, so the offender began to beat the face, body and limbs of the Lviv man with a hammer.
In court, the immigrant confirmed that he attacked a colleague with a knife, but he did not seem to hit the victim with a hammer.
The offender then took his belongings, locked the victim in the apartment and left the key in the door so that it could not be opened from the inside.
The victim lost consciousness from the blows, when he regained consciousness, the attacker was no longer in the apartment.
The man found his phone and called the foreman and told him what had happened. Medics went to the scene.
The court documents state that the lock of the entrance door to the apartment was locked. The key itself was broken – part was in the core of the lock, and the other was lying on the floor of the stairwell.
So they called the rescuers, who unblocked the door.
Doctors managed to save the victim’s life and took the man to intensive care in time.
According to the attacker, when he was leaving the apartment, he realized that he could have killed the victim with his blows. Because of this, he left the scene of the crime, but he had no intention of killing the man. He believes that he caused minor bodily harm to the victim, and is ready to be punished for it.
Judge Halyna Bilinska found the man guilty of attempted murder and sentenced him to 7 years in prison. He must also pay the victim more than UAH 58,000 in moral and material compensation and UAH 10,000 in attorney’s fees.
