In Lviv, doctors saved a woman whose liver and gall bladder were nearly destroyed by 7-millimeter rare helminths. The patient was operated on at St. Panteleimon Hospital, reports the First Medical Association of Lviv. Three months ago, a 51-year-old resident of Volyn Lyudmila began to feel nausea and pain in the right hypochondrium. The woman turned to the doctors, but they did not find the cause of the worsening condition. Over the next month, the woman got significantly worse. Lyudmila almost stopped sleeping from the pain. With the help of examinations, doctors diagnosed the woman with alveococcosis (a serious parasitic disease caused by one of the types of helminths) of the right lobe of the liver. The right lobe of the liver along with its large vessels and gallbladder were affected. The doctors decided on surgical intervention and removed the right part of the patient’s liver and gallbladder. The operation lasted three hours. Lyudmila spent three days in intensive care and seven days in the surgery department. Currently, the patient’s condition is satisfactory, she will undergo rehabilitation and a follow-up examination in two weeks. According to doctors, the source of the spread of alveococcosis is wild animals, in particular, rodents, which emit particles filled with eggs into the environment. Parasite larvae enter the human body through the digestive system. Most often, this happens during contact with unwashed food: on the hunt, during the collection of berries or forest products, and even after contact with dogs or cats. Larvae settle in the liver, lungs, less often – in the structures of the brain. Their length reaches 7 mm. The disease is rare and is 1.37-3.85 per 100,000 population. According to statistics, up to 20 people with alveococcosis are operated on in the Lviv region every year. Due to too late referral to specialists, part of such patients cannot be saved.
