In Ukraine, for the first time, two organs were successfully transplanted at once: a pancreas and a kidney. On the same day, doctors performed three more complex transplants: lungs, heart and liver, reports the First Medical Association of Lviv. 33-year-old nurse Olena Tkachuk from the Rivne region underwent pancreas and kidney transplant surgery. The intervention was performed by specialists of the Saint Panteleimon Hospital. Since pancreas transplantation is considered one of the most difficult operations in the world, Lviv doctors were assisted by surgeons from the Kyiv Feofania clinic. Olena has been suffering from diabetes since she was 5 years old. Her pancreas was not producing insulin. After Olena gave birth to a child, her kidneys also failed. The intervention was performed by specialists of the Saint Panteleimon Hospital. The woman spent almost 9 hours on the operating table. She underwent a pancreas transplant over 6 hours, and a kidney over another 2 hours. The organs started working immediately on the operating table. Elena’s husband is a military man, his leave coincided with his wife’s surgery. “The woman is happy that she can finally live without insulin injections and hemodialysis procedures. She dreams of spending more time with her husband and 11-year-old daughter, as well as going to work, which she was once forced to leave due to illness,” the medical facility says. Elena was discharged from the hospital on the 11th day after the operation, on her birthday. This is the first time in the history of Ukraine that so many organs were transplanted in one hospital. Thanks to the consent of the family of a 42-year-old man who died of a stroke, Olena and three other Ukrainians received a chance for a second life. Lungs were transplanted to a man from Donetsk region who had cystic hypoplasia of both lungs. He lived on oxygen support for three years. Elena was discharged from the hospital on the 11th day after the operation, on her birthday, the liver was transplanted to a 43-year-old resident of Transcarpathia, who was suffering from cirrhosis. The man experienced seven internal bleedings. The heart was transplanted to a 48-year-old man from Lviv. He waited a year for the operation. His heart could not pump blood and could stop at any moment. “This is the first time in the history of Ukraine that so many organs were transplanted in one hospital. Four lives were saved,” says the First Medical Association of Lviv. Read also: In Spain, for the first time in the world, a fully robotic lung transplant was performed
