In Lviv, three children underwent rare stem cell transplantation operations

In Lviv, doctors successfully administered stem cells to three children who had impaired limb mobility.
This was reported by the First Medical Association of Lviv. The operation was performed by the Italian surgeon Roberto Brambilla together with orthopedic traumatologists of the St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital of the First Medical Association of Lviv.
“Intervention with the implantation of stem cells is one of the world’s leading methods of regenerative medicine. This modern treatment method is a chance for small patients with burn injuries and other pathologies to increase mobility in their limbs.” – say the doctors.
One of the three patients who underwent such an operation was 17-year-old Bozhena from Lviv Oblast.

The girl was born with fusion of the radius and ulna bones, due to which the palm of her left hand was turned forward. This prevented the girl from being independent in everyday life.
A year ago, a team of orthopedic traumatologists at St. Nicholas Hospital corrected the pathology, and now it was necessary to restore the full activity of the girl’s hand. To speed up Bozhena’s recovery, Roberto Brambilla proposed a new method – implantation of stem cells in the area that needs restoration.

The operation was divided into several stages.
“First, the surgeons removed adipose tissue from the patient’s thigh using liposuction and separated the so-called mesenchymal stem cells from it. Then they were used in the previously operated area of the hand.
Stem cells are effective in such cases, because they have the ability to transform into any other type of cells, which in turn speeds up the process of tissue recovery.” the message says.
Doctors note that two other children, who were also operated on, had pathologies as a result of injuries and burns. They are already waiting for a quick recovery.
It will be recalled that in Kyiv, doctors operated on a child for 23 hours: they simultaneously transplanted a liver and corrected a heart defect.
