In New York, on May 11, the city council passed a law that prohibits discrimination based on weight and height. This is reported by The New York Times. 44 out of 51 members of the city council voted for the bill. The document adds weight and height to the list of 27 grounds on which discrimination is already prohibited – disability, race, gender, age, religion, marital status, sexual orientation, etc. Photo: IgorVetushko/Depositphotos “We should never treat people differently because of their weight,” said Mayor Eric Adams. It is noted that employers and businesses are prohibited from discriminating against people on these grounds when they receive housing, access to public facilities and employment. Exceptions are conditions where height and weight are necessary to perform the job (policemen, firefighters, etc.). In case of violation of the draft law, a person will be able to write a complaint about discrimination, which will be considered by the city human rights commission. If the document is approved, New York will become the largest American city where discrimination based on weight is prohibited. It is noted that the document is part of a national campaign to combat weight discrimination. In the states of Michigan and Washington, a similar law has already been adopted. Earlier we talked about a study that proves that if a person manages to lose weight during middle age, his risk of premature death is reduced by almost half.
