In Scotland, they saved the “loneliest” sheep in Great Britain, which lived alone near an inaccessible rock for 2 years.

The sheep, named Fiona, has been at the foot of the cliffs in the Cromarty Firth since at least 2021, The Guardian and The Telegraph reported.

An animal welfare organization called her rescue efforts “incredibly difficult.” However, a group of five rescuers managed to get her up the steep slope.

The sheep is very overgrown with wool, but the rescuers say that it is healthy.

“She’s fine. Britain’s loneliest sheep is no longer alone…The rescue was epic”said Cammy Wilson, who organized the rescue mission.

Cammy Wilson, a sheep shearer from Ayrshire and presenter of the BBC’s Landward programme, decided to save Fiona after seeing media coverage of her fate.

“We came here with heavy equipment and pulled this sheep up an incredibly steep slope. She’s in incredible condition, 4.5 points. She’s overfed – it was no easy task to get her up that slope.

She is going to a very special place that many of you know very well, where you will be able to see her almost every day.”– wrote Wilson on Facebook.

Now Fiona has already had her hair cut, and her future fate is being decided. Activists plan to transfer the sheep to the farm park, the BBC writes.

It will be recalled that the lonely sheep Fiona was first spotted in 2021 in the Scottish bay of Cromarty Firth.

Kayaker Gillian Turner saw the animal two years ago when she was paddling along the Sutherland coast with her club.

She thought that the sheep would return home by itself. But two years later, she saw the animal again in the same place and was horrified.

“We honestly thought she might come home that first year. The poor sheep had been on her own for at least two years. It’s torture for a herd animal and she seemed desperate to make contact with us the two times she we swam past her”said the woman.

The rower contacted the mountain rescue team as well as the SSPCA (Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), but the rescuers were unable to reach the animal and assured that the animal was not in danger.

The SSPCA received many offers from people who wanted to donate money to support the rescue of the sheep, with some people offering to take her in.

A petition to save the sheep gathered more than 52,000 signatures before the “loneliest sheep” was finally rescued by activists in 2023.
