The Swiss parliament has banned wearing clothing that covers the face in public. It is, in particular, about women’s Muslim clothing – a veil, burqa or niqab, reports Bloomberg. The ban applies to all clothing and will affect, in particular, football fans and left- and right-wing radicals, who often hide their faces during demonstrations. However, the law has exceptions that allow the face to be covered in religious places, to protect health, or during entertainment events such as carnival. Violation of the law carries a fine of 1,000 francs ($1,116). The author of the law is the Swiss People’s Party. During the agitation for the law, they shouted the slogan “Let’s stop extremism.” It is noted that in 2021, 51% of Swiss voted for the ban in a nationwide referendum. The adopted law was criticized in the Muslim community, noting that it is aimed at spreading “anti-Muslim hatred”.
