In Ternopil, an employee of the ritual service who removed gold from the dead was convicted

An employee of a funeral service was tried in Ternopil, who removed gold from the dead on the way to the morgue.

The man was sentenced to 5 years behind bars and the payment of monetary compensation to the relatives of the deceased, reports the press service of the Ternopil Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

“A man from Ternopil who, while transporting the bodies of the dead to the morgue, stole their belongings, was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment by the prosecutors of the Ternopil District Prosecutor’s Office (Part 4 of Article 185 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine)” – the message says.

The prosecutor proved in court that in February 2023, the driver of the funeral service committed theft while transporting 2 bodies of those killed in a road accident.

The man made sure that no one was following him, stopped the car and removed the gold chains with crosses from the dead.

In June of the same year, according to the investigation, the accused stole a ring from the hand of the deceased while transporting his body from the nursing home to the morgue.

Relatives of the deceased wrote a statement to the police about the disappearance of valuables, and law enforcement officers established the identity of the thief.

The court found the man guilty of theft committed on a large scale or during a state of war or state of emergency (Part 4 of Article 185 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

The man was sentenced to 5 years in prison, but the sentence has not yet entered into force.

The husband will also be charged more than 21.4 thousand hryvnias in property damage, the verdict says.
