Surgeons at St. Luke’s Hospital saved the hand and partially restored the mobility of the arm that the woman injured with a cleaver while chopping corn leaves. The blades amputated four of her fingers and completely shattered her hand.
According to the First Medical Association of Lviv, 59-year-old Halyna Skorbach from the city of Rohatyn, in the Ivano-Frankivsk region. A woman is forced to do all the household work herself, because the men from her family protect the country. She had an accident last winter.
“Due to the enemy’s constant attacks on the energy infrastructure, the lights were often turned off at that time. And there was about to be another shutdown, and she had to have time to grind corn leaves and feed livestock.
So I did everything hastily and did not feel how my left hand ended up in the chopping block. The screw grabbed the glove, pulled the woman’s palm through the knives and actually crushed her fingers and hand.” – doctors say.

The chances of saving the limb were slim. The doctors stated that four fingers were so badly mutilated by the sawmill that it was impossible to save them. The hand was also damaged: doctors found multiple fractures, bone and soft tissue defects, as well as damaged tendons, arteries and muscles.
“In order to fight for the partial preservation of the hand, the surgeons immediately began to operate on Ms. Halyna. They fixed the bones with metal structures, sewed tendons, nerves and arteries, and performed plastic surgery of soft tissues and skin.
The doctors spent about 4 hours restoring all the structures.” – explained in the medical association.

According to doctors, problems also arose in the postoperative period: the wound took a long time to heal and the skin on the hand began to die:
“During the second operation, the surgeons removed dead tissue and transplanted skin from the patient’s thigh to this area. The intervention was successful. Later, the wound healed, the fractures grew together, and sensitivity also began to return.”
More than 9 months after the injury, the function of the tendons of the injured arm of the patient improved significantly, and the range of motion increased. Thanks to this, she was even able to make a necklace for herself and sew a shirt for her daughter.

“I held myself in my hands the whole time and didn’t shed a single tear. But when the bandage was removed for the first time, I cried. I didn’t believe that my hand could be saved. The sawmill just crushed it.
I am more than satisfied with the result of the surgeons’ work, because now I can again exercise at home and do my favorite thing – embroidery.” – Mrs. Halyna shares her successes.
