For the first time, the Lutsk Zoo showed a rescued moose named Lapka, which was orphaned shortly after birth. The animal got to the menagerie exhausted. Zoo workers shared the story of the cub’s rescue on Facebook on February 14. The paw was not immediately taken to the zoo, hoping that the cub’s mother would appear. The zoo volunteers waited half a day, watching from afar animal.” However, the miracle did not happen. And the child could not stand on his own at that time – he did not have enough strength. Therefore, Kovel zoo volunteers asked the director of our zoo, Lyudmila Denysenko, to accept the moose. They organized the delivery of the animal to us,” the zoo recalls. The moose was found on May 3 on the side of the Kovel highway. The baby arrived very exhausted. His umbilical cord did not even fall off – this indicated that the moose was 3-5 days old from birth. The team of the enterprise started to take care of the animal. Paw was exhausted and lost her mother. At first, the moose was very poorly fed: the first few times he managed to suck only 50 ml of milk. But the zoo staff had experience in caring for newborn animals: from tigers to squirrels. For Paw, 24-hour feeding was organized with intervals of 2-3 hours, like a baby. The body was treated with anti-tick drugs because there was almost no living space on the animal. Zoo workers counted every day and every small success that would indicate recovery, and finally cured the moose. Zookeepers brought the moose to the zoo , where the workers fought for the animal’s life. Laptsi is now 10 months old. She walks, eats, drinks and even “shows character”. She supported us during these difficult months of caring for and taking care of the baby. She gave Lapka the strength not to give up and recover,” the zoo says. The struggle for Lapka’s life was long and difficult – the zoo workers were even afraid to report her earlier, so as not to “spoil her”. Zoo workers mention that during treatment, Lapka was in critical condition more than once, so visitors are asked not to harm Lapka and other animals while visiting the zoo. “A moose has its own diet. It does not include sweets, bakery products, or anything that you bring to our territory,” the zoo says.
