In the Rivne region, the court sent the mother who drowned her two sons in a quarry to a psychiatric hospital – News

The Kuznetsovsky City Court in the Rivne Oblast applied forced hospitalization to a psychiatric hospital for a 42-year-old mother who drowned her young children in a reservoir.

According to the court’s decision, the woman will be sent to an institution with strict supervision, the Rivne Regional Prosecutor’s Office reported.

It is noted there that the woman led to the local quarry and drowned her two sons due to mental disorders – she could not realize her actions and manage them.

What is known about the tragedy

On August 23, 2023, around 11:00 a.m., a 42-year-old resident of the village of Sopachiv, Varas district, along with her six- and seven-year-old sons, went to the local quarry to swim.

At the time, the Office of the Prosecutor General said that the woman first immersed her eldest son in the water. She held him in that position until he stopped resisting. After that, the mother went ashore to fetch her youngest son.

“She took her younger son by the hand and led him to the wooden platform, under which there was a considerable depth, and pushed him into the water, knowing that he could not swim. She stood on that platform and contemplated the inevitability of drowning“, the Prosecutor General’s Office noted.

According to the police, soon the 37-year-old father of the children ran to the reservoir and tried to save one of his sons on his own – he pulled him out of the water and began to perform resuscitation measures, but the boy died.

The body of another child was later recovered by divers.

The woman was informed of the suspicion of the intentional murder of two minors – clauses 1, 2, part 2 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code (intentional murder).

She confessed to the crime.
